Extra nights on our trip - Where do we stay?

Hi there,

My husband and I are spending 30 days in Portugal in May and June of this year. We have travelled all over Europe, but this is the first time visiting Portugal for both of us. We have a majority of our trip planned, but we have a few open nights here and there and are unsure where to fill them. I'm looking for small towns worth seeing for a couple days that most people don't get to in shorter trips. We love to hike, swim, eat and drink.

This is what we have so far:
7 nights in Madeira
3 nights Porto
3 nights Douro Valley
5 nights in Lisbon
5 nights in Algarve

Some places we're thinking of are Coimbra, Evora, and Aveiro. We'll be doing day trips from all our main hubs, but if you think if you think we need to add days to them or maneuver some, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

You don’t say if you will have a car for part of your trip. If you do, you might want to check out Julie Dawn Fox for her 12 historic villages of Portugal Itinerary. She also has lots of info on smaller places that are a bit off the beaten path.

Without a car, I would stick with Coimbra and Evora. Both are worth a couple of days. However, if you can’t do Evora early in your trip, be aware the Alentejo gets very hot as it goes into summer.

Again with a car, Tomar, Alcobaça and Batalha are very nice. The last two for a visit, not overnight.
And, lastly, the Minho region, Braga, Guimarães and other towns within driving distance is very nice.

Thank you so much! That is exactly what I need! We will have a car the entire time, so those day trips sound perfect.
