Is Evora a "must see" town? We arrive Lisbon at the end of a cruise and then will spend the remainder of our time in Spain. I was hoping to bus to Evora, rent a car there, then drive to hill towns of Spain then drop car before doing the cities (Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba) but the drop off for the car is over $1800! So I am thinking skipping Evora altogether and fly to Spain. Thoughts? We have "done" Portugal before but never been to Evora. Sounds charming in Rick's guide book.
Evora is a lovely small town, with good food, a few worthwhile sites, and easy options to visit cork farms should you so choose. But, is it worth $1800 in car drop off fees? Probably not. Have you considered, after getting from Lisbon to Evora, taking a bus to one of your Spanish cities of choice (a quick check of Rome to Rio will give you options regarding time and cost, but double check them; it's for rough ideas only), and picking up your car there? Presumably you could round trip your car in Spain, drop it off and head home for less than the $1800 in drop off fees. Perhaps even a one-way drop off within Spain would be a worthy cost to absorb. Depends on your time and budget, as with all aspects of travel.
