Évora to Lisbon Train Reliability in December

I’m taking a day trip from Lisbon to Évora and wanted to ask about real world experience with train reliability. I’m not too worried about delays, but I am a little concerned about the possibility of cancellations on the return. My return train is at 4:57 pm and the tickets were promo fares, so they are not refundable.

For anyone who has taken this route recently, have you seen cancellations on the Évora line? I don’t want to be paranoid, but I also don’t want to risk getting stranded. I can book a backup FlixBus for 6 pm, but wanted to hear from people who have actually done this trip.

If you have a promo fare that is train specific the railway has nevertheless an obligation to transport you. Cancelling a train does not cancel the ticket. So if your train is cancelled you can use your ticket on a later train. Ask staff at the station in that case.

I think it is going to be less likely that your train is cancelled than a flixbus...

You don’t mention when in December. I’m not certain the train would run on the 25th, but there is no reason to think it would be cancelled any other day. Unless a strike is called for. And, those are publicized way in advance. Occasionally there are train delays, but, for the most part the trains in Portugal run reliably all year. Not to mention this is a popular route for tourists and locals. I wouldn’t be concerned.
