Evora or Coimbra for Day Trip?

My boyfriend and I are going to be in Lisbon for 7.5 days (March 21-March 29). It will be our first time in Portugal. We are interested in making two day trips. We are fairly convinced a day trip to Sintra is a must based on RS' reviews (also watched his most recent special). We are torn between going to Evora for a day or going to Coimbra for a day. Evora looks so beautiful and the Roman ruins, bone church, and megalithic ruins sound extremely interesting, and the 1.5 hour train/bus ride sounds fairly easy. Coimbra's university, the library, and RS' walk (as described in his travel guide) sounds delightful. We love history, architecture, and food and wine, so we are seeking guidance on which city to choose.

Any insights or pros/cons is so appreciated!

I didn't get to Evora on my trip to Portugal last May. I did spend a few nights in Coimbra on the way north from Lisbon to Porto. I'm guessing Coimbra is far less touristy than Evora. in fact, Coimbra isn't touristy at all, and that may be a nice break from the tourists in Lisbon (but will it be busy in March? Not sure.).

Coimbra is pretty small. The university at the top of the steep hill up is very interesting. During the 1930s, the fascist dictator Salazar, who had been a professor at the university, expanded it and left behind some ugly fascist architecture - big, outsized buildings - along with some of the much older buildings you can see during the tour. I think you'd really need to like universities to have this make it worth a day trip from Lisbon.

You might also consider a day trip to Tomar. I stopped here for a few hours off the train (more of a detour than a direct stop off the train) on the way north from Lisbon to Coimbra. Tomar is a little more charming and even smaller than Coimbra. It lacks the big university, but there's also an old convent on the hill above the town. I hear Tomar will be added to the next Rick Steves Portugal book, so soon it will probably be mobbed with tourists. Last year, not so much.

One of my favorite stops was to Nazare, a beach town in central Portugal (and an old favorite or Rick Steve's). I did it as a long day trip from Coimbra by bus. You'd also probably do it by bus from Lisbon. Perhaps at the end of March the town will be pretty dead, but it's worth a last-minute diversion based on the weather. Nazare is a tacky tourist beach town in once sense but also very unique. It is included in one of the Rick Steves Portugal videos - you can watch for yourself to see if you think you'd like it. I love the ocean so it was a must for me.

If you'd consider going all the way to Coimbra, I might even push it and go all the way to Porto for the day. That would be a long day trip but not much more than Coimbra, really.

Evora won’t be touristy in March! Personally, I think Nazare is over-rated, but again, March isn’t the time to be visiting the coast.

Evora is half the travel distance of Coimbra and therefore an easier day trip. There is enough to see to keep you occupied for 2 full days! The ossuary church is very interesting and with the exhibition is much more than just the small bone chapel. The megaliths tour maybe difficult to fit into a day trip. Try wine tasting here. We had a fantastic lunch at the museum of the sacred art behind the cathedral.

I would favor Evora over Coimbra simply because it’s closer and would give you more time to actually see the town. But, both are great places to visit. Neither will be that crowded in March.
I would suggest you read up on both to see which sounds more attractive to you. As stated earlier, the Megalith tour in Evora (my favorite thing in either town) would likely not be doable in a day trip. But, both towns have a lot to offer, including great food.
You won’t be disappointed no matter which one you chose.
