We'll be visiting Portugal in October. We would love to seek out non-tourist restaurants and cafes. What is the best way of finding good places to eat?
The way we find a good place to eat is to walk down the street and go into a restaurant that has an outside menu board printed in only the language of the country you are in. That, and just walk into any cafe that serves alcohol.
Hand written menus on chalk boards. Restaurants that only offer a few choices. These are good bets for local places. Stay away from places that have a "barker" out front whose job is to lure you in. Stay away from places that have "canned" pictures of the food they serve that looks like it has been cut from magazines. For example a picture of a plate of lasagna from a magazine or some industry promotional.
