Eastern Portugal focus

My husband and I are planning a 5-6 week trip to Portugal in Oct/Nov this year. We'll spend some time in Lisbon and the Duoro Valley, and probably in the Evora area, but Eastern Portugal and it's many hill towns, forts and castles also intrigues us. I've done some research and a have a few spots in mind, but would be interested in what other folks have to say. What locations would you put on your list to explore?

I have a few suggestions. We enjoyed our time in a Schist Village. We stayed in Piodao.

I'd never stayed in a paradour in either Spain or Portugal. We loved our stay at Parador Casa da Insua. There is a lot to do in the area including visiting Viseu.

We enjoyed both Viseu and Lamego as well as the Parador Casa da Ínsua. Monsanto was on the to visit list, but we didn’t make it there.

Since you’ll be hugging the Spanish border, consider crossing into Spain to visit places like San Martín de Trevejo, Trevejo, or Olivenza. Each is on the list of Spain’s prettiest villages. There’s also Alcántara and Badajoz. Back in Portugal is Elvas with its forts.
