Dropping car in Vigo, Spain and catching train to Porto. Having difficulty

Drop off fee is insane to take a car to Porto from Spain so we figured we would drop in Vigo. But it sounds like Vigo not the most charming place to stay the night but has an easy train to Porto. I’ve found a couple of options for charming inns outside of town but now find the only train leaves at 8:58 which makes it almost impossible to have time to drive into town, drop car and get the train.

I’m flumuxed. The only other option is to drop and stay the night in Santiago but train from there well over 4 hours.

I welcome any ideas.

There's also an evening train from Vigo to Porto at 19:56 (schedule published through the end of February).

http://www.autna.com/es/horarios-y-tarifas/ usually has three buses from Vigo to Porto at 9:00, 12:00, and 16:30.

Or, from Santiago de Compostela, www.alsa.com has a direct bus to Porto 12:00.

Avoid Sundays, since most car rental offices are closed and bus service reduced.

Vigo isn’t a world class city but is comfortable and safe. I would stay in town or if you want to stay further out, numerous bus lines offer service to Porto. If you go to rome2rio.com, you’ll see the various options and you might be able to resolve your problem.

Yes, I'm one who was not entranced by Vigo, but it's not a bad place you have to avoid if it's where you need to stay from the transportation standpoint.

European buses tend to be very comfortable. I'd happily take a bus if it left at a considerably more convenient time and didn't take a great deal longer than the train.

The Spanish border town of Tui is cute. I wonder whether one could spend the night there, get an inexpensive taxi across the border to Valenca, then travel on to Porto from there. It looks like it's not more than 2 or 3 miles across the river from Tui to Valenca.

Thank you, I will look into your options. Knew about the evening train but don’t want to lose a day from Porto. But didn’t think about buses - that might be a great idea. Then we can stay out in the country and still get to Porto by mid afternoon.

Rome2rio is the best for trip planning!!

Thank you everyone

We took the bus from Porto to Valenca in October for €10 (goeuro.com)one way and stayed in Tui as our first stop on the Camino; Tui is nice, however, the old walled city of Valenca is nicer, and am sure you could find a charming place to stay inside the walls.
The bus has a stop in the middle of Porto near the train and Metro stations.
