Quite a few years ago, my wife and I went to California and spent a week driving the coast from LA to San Francisco with no itinerary. Is there such an opportunity in Portugal and have any of you done it? Next year we'd like to visit Lisbon and Porto, and I am wondering if it would behoove us to take a few days for a nice drive from one to the other.
If you have the time, most definitely take the roads less traveled. One advantage to taking the back roads is you avoid the tolls on the highways. It does takes longer and you need to slow way down entering the villages, but it can be a relaxing drive.
It has been some years ago (maybe ten?) that we did a road trip in Portugal. It was a great trip!! Am not sure that I can remember every stop but, roughly, we did this: landed in Lisbon, picked up car, stopped by Obidos en route to Nazare; went on to Tomar en route to Coimbra; next to Porto; then Pinhao; to Estremoz en route Marvao; next to Monsaraz; then Evora; and back to Lisbon, with a day trip to Sintra. Am sure that I have forgotten a stop or two. As much as we loved Porto, the small towns - especially Marvao and Monsaraz - are our best memories. Whatever you choose, have a wonderful trip!
