Driving between Sao Martinho do Porto and Peniche. Who has some thoughts?

Hi. We are going to be in Sao Martinho do Porto in October and I have heard that there is are some stunning sights along the way. I was just now following the road south from Sao Martinho do Porto in Google Earth and everything was fine. All of a sudden I ran into the Lagoa de Obidos. That was fun, and there is no roadway crossing the mouth of the Lagoa. I'm just wondering if some one of you out there has been on this road and perhaps even taken this drive from Sao Martinho do Porto to Peniche who would be willing to share their thoughts and impressions as well as their route with me.
Oh, and what is the Baleal area like?
Thank you for any random thoughts you feel like passing along.

Maybe it's already on your to-do list but Bathala Monastery is an absolute must-see.
Obidos as also a nice medieval town.
a bit more inside is the Tomar convent as well
I didn't have time to go to Alcobaça monastery, but read that it was a great sight for history and architecture as well.

FirIslander: did you find any more intel on your route? We're considering Peniche/Baleal as a base camp next May [will have five nights] so I'm making a list of potential drives/day trips to include Obidos, Caldas da Rainha, Alcobaça, Batalha, Leiria, Berlengas Grande then Sintra on our way back to Lisbon. How did you decide on Sao Martinho do Porto? Would love info on your itinerary and/or actual experiences following your trip this month--safe travels!
