Can’t help you because I’ve never driven around Portugal. Are you thinking about renting a car while staying in Lisbon ? My daughter just got back from a 12 day trip in Lisbon. She easily found her way in Lisbon with public transport and walking. She told me it was , besides Alfama, pretty straightforward. Taxi’s are also not that expensive. She took a taxi from her hostel close to Av. de Liberdade to the airport and had to pay €12,-.

Yes what you say is true but I will also be doing a lot of driving, and picking up and dropping off the car will require some city driving. I see it mentioned that the Waze app will do voice navigation in Portugal but I'd prefer google or apple maps if the voice navigation also works in Portugal. It doesn't work in every country.

Maps.me

It will do the same as Google, but does not require any kind of Wi-Fi or phone plan connection. Just finished driving 1500km on the small roads in Croatia. Used it in Crete last year also. Used it in Scotland. Even if I am not driving in a country I use it for walking directions.

Google maps works just fine in Portugal, and every other country I have been in.

Will find out about Portugal in the fall, but Google maps using downloaded maps has worked in a number of countries without a problem. Pronunciation with any system is an issue, but once you figure out what the system is doing it’s easy.

If driving in cities, the chances of you seeing a street name before having to turn is slim. In many places, the street name is on the building between the ground and first floor, and not at every intersection. Essentially, you’ll pass it before you see it.

I could never understand the written or spoken names of foreign streets on Google Maps, but I did not really need to do so. Google Maps is very good about giving you a head-up notice of when to turn whether you are driving or walking. I just followed the voice prompts or glance at the arrow on the display when I got confused.

I have used Apple Maps and Google Maps, both with voice navigation, in Portugal and both work fine. You should have no problem using either of them as you are used to doing here.

Thanks, that is what I wanted to hear. There is no doubt a way to trick these apps so all the features can be tested remotely but this doesn't replace first hand experience.
