How strictly do they enforce the dress code at the monastery. I understand no bare shoulders which is not a problem but no bare knees? So no shorts even if they come just above the knee. This question is for both men and women.
If they have a published dress code, simply follow their dress code out of respect.
Read the dress code and do what it says would seem the right thing to do.
I've entered many churches in Portugal wearing shorts and nobody said anything to me.
I usually wear "zip off pants" , if there was an issue I would zip back the lower portion of the pants,
(stored in one of the cargo pockets).
I find those pants particular helpful when staying out for the day and night, shorts for the hot day transform into pants for the cooler evening without having to return to the hotel to change clothing.
Pearphs you may want to consider those for your travel wardrobe.
We were there last week and they are not enforcing the dress code at all.
I (male) wore shorts. Lots of people in short shorts, tank tops and uncovered shoulder dresses.
My colleague from Portugal went home last year and I questioned her before a left and she also indicated that there were no restrictions in place last year.
As mentioned above this seemed to be the norm in all the beautiful churches we visited.
The website has this warning:
Strict dress code: Please note that off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

Maybe bring a large scarf or shawl to wrap around your legs just in case? Would be better than being turned away after having stood in line.
I’m in the monastery now, It is pretty hot today in Lisbon and many young women have super short miniskirts or shorts. Many have tan tops.
Thanks for all the info. I won't have an issue either way as I can wear a dress but if it's still hot in September, I'm sure my husband will be in shorts.
It’s way too hot for them to enforce a dress code this summer. Also, the line is about an hour long and almost too much for anyone without an umbrella. Pre-ordering tickets doesn’t help. Also don’t plan for on visiting on Sundays when the church is closed.
