Is it appropriate to wear shorts while visiting Lisbon? Can I wear shorts in the churches?
Rick's guidebook suggests that a dress code avoiding shorts or bare shoulders in Portuguese churches is "encouraged, but rarely enforced." Most churches there are not a big draw to attract crowds of underdressed tourists. If you're making a special trip to Fatima, then you'd probably plan the day's wardrobe around that.
Hi sdross1!
No one will be looking stangely at you if you wear shorts in church (well, maybe some of our lovely old ladies will do, but they will look that way even if you are not in a church). No one is outside or in the entrance of a church to check your dress code. I mean... understand that you're not visiting only churches, but other things in general, so you need to be confortable. But I will give you a tip that I use in ohter countries: take a scarf with you, it is usefull for your head and you can put it around your shoulders or as a belt.
Thank you for answering my question.
