Douro Valley Question and Portugal itinerary suggestions

Hi everyone,

Hubby and I have decided to add Portugal to our trip in September. We will have 11 nights. First time in Portugal. Will not rent a car. We will fly in to Porto and out of Lisbon. My “first pass” at our itinerary is:

Porto - 3 nights
Douro Valley - 2 nights (thinking Pinhao)
Coimbra - 2 nights
Lisbon - 4 nights (day trip to Sintra)

Question: should we spend a couple of nights in Douro Valley or do it as day trip from Porto. Is there a better choice than Pinhao?
(Oops that’s two questions)

As always, thank you for your input.

Hi, I recently returned from Portugal and spent 2 nights in the Douro Valley. We drove there and chose to stay in one of the valley’s “quintas”- it was really a nice experience as we got a wine tour of the vineyard and were able to taste some nice ports. If you are really into ports, it’s a really great experience and very close to other vineyards for tours and tastings. We stayed at Quinta de Marroccos- lovely inn with a very homey atmosphere. Very close to Peso de Regua. You’ll love the Douro Valley!

Stopped at the Pensao Ponte Grande in Pinhao on a cycling tour i was leading in 1993
Remember being welcomed with a glass of port on a red hot day. A beer would have been better!
