We are going to be in Tavira for 3 days at the beginning of April. We will have a rental car. After our time in Tavira, we’ll be driving to Sintra for 2 nights then Aviero 4 nights then Porto for 5 nights. Any suggestions for a day trips?

I know the feeling! I am planning our trip now- there is an amazing number of interesting places in Portugal.

Aveiro- Coimbra- easy train ride
Porto- Douro valley, Amarante, Guimaraes/Braga
From Tavira - Cacela Velha, Castro Marim, the Roman ruins at Estoi, Loule or Alte for day trips.
I would take a night from Porto and add it to Sintra, otherwise you will only have one day there. Make sure your car has a toll road transponder. Add at least a third to Google Maps timings.
See Coimbra en route to Porto as it’s too far to double back for a day trip. From Porto, the Douro is the obvious day trip.
Aveiro is only an hour from Porto, so there will be some overlap for day trips, but you will be too far north for the interesting towns such as Alcobaca, Tomar and Batalha.
