Day trips from Lisbon

We will be visiting Lisbon for the first time in October and spending five nights there. We are looking for suggestions for day trips., preferably by train or a group tour as opposed to renting a car. We have enjoyed wine- tasting tours in other places so suggestions for those are welcome too. We don't want to hike or navigate rough terrain so Sintra may not be a good option for us.
Thank you

Five nights gives you just four days in Lisbon. One day trip is enough and you should see Sintra. We never saw any rough terrain there, hills, yes, but we rode to the top and back in a shuttle bus from town center. Easy train ride from Lisbon. You will need to visit Belem area of Lisbon by tram as well as walk about the city, Alfama, Castello , etc.

A note on the trip to Belem while you're in Lisbon. We were in Lisbon last April on Freedom Day. This was a national holiday so the crowds were unusually heavy, but the tram to Belem (15E) was a disaster--unbelievably crowded and a screwy schedule (or lack thereof). If you choose to go to Belem (it is a fantastic place to visit) take the train from Lisbon, not the 15E. The train to Belem departs from the Cais do Sodre station (west of the Praca do Comercio). When you arrive in Belem you can walk to most of the landmarks.

On our forthcoming trip to Lisbon (we'll be back there October 26-28), we're planning on a day trip to Sintra. While the train to Sintra and back is a "snap", do some research on Sintra and getting from venue to venue. If you check this Forum, you'll see several posts I've made in this regard. Read the threads for more information.

You don't have to leave Lisbon for wine tasting, check the internet for this. There are several "food tours" (they have a more euphoric name than this), some, I suspect have wine tasting.

Enjoy Lisbon, it is a wonderful city.
