Day trip to Sintra

I saw a previous post on a day trip to Sintra but wanted to know if spending just a day there from Lisbon is it worth getting a tour guide of the area where they include the Outside area of the gardens only of the Peña Palace (read elsewhere not really worth going inside).

Or Is this area are you able to navigate yourself and not hire a guide? Enough to spend a day here?

Thanks!

We spent a day there and did not use a guide. We had read about what we would see and had a good guidebook with us.

We had a guide with car that did not include the Peña Palace because she said that was easily done on our own. There’s more to Sintra than the Peña Palace area.

My wife and I are going to Lisbon in Oct. We will be there for 5 days and will travel to Sintra daily for 2 days, without a guide. There are 5 or 6 main attractions and we plan to visit 2 per day: Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, Regaleira Palace, Monserrate Palace. You should have zero probelm finding enough to do for one day, assuming that you like gardens and medieval palaces as well as hikes in the nature.

Based on what I have found in my research, the main reason to get a guide is to avoid the hassle of transportation -- they will pick you up from your lodging in Lisbon and take you to each places, vs yourself taking a metro or bus to the train station, then take the train to Sintra, then take another bus to Pena Palace.

I plan to visit Sintra in late October and have questions regarding which ticket to purchase. I want to visit Quinta da Regaleira and know that I need a ticket and choose a specific time. But what about other sites? I want to walk the grounds of Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, but I do not plan to go inside. I have read that I do not need a ticket for Pena Palace if I am only walking the outside walls. I do not see a "park only" ticket on the official website. Any help clarifying this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

We used a guide when we went to Sintra on a day trip. He made everything easier and more efficient. He also procured all the tickets for the monuments ahead of time and dropped us off as close to the entrances of the different sites as he could. In one day by using a guide we were able to see the National Palace, Quinta da Regalaira, the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace including interiors. It was well worth it.

During our stay in Portugal, we booked a private 4x4 day tour through Easy Moto Tours and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, Gerard, was friendly, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable about the Sintra and Cascais region.

The Jeep experience was a great way to explore areas most tourists never reach — quiet forest roads, coastal cliffs, and small villages with local charm. Gerard shared history and stories that gave real context to what we were seeing.

Lunch (not included) was at a small local spot he recommended — simple, authentic, and delicious.

If you’re looking for something private, flexible, and genuinely local, I’d highly recommend reaching out directly to Easy Moto Tours at +351 915 970 117 or visiting https://www.easymototours.com

We visited Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon on October 30 without a guide. There's definitely enough to see to occupy a day. We would have stayed overnight to visit more attractions, but our schedule didn't permit it. Next time!
Following advice from other travelers, we watched the weather forecast and chose the best day and reserved 1:30 pm tickets, contrary to much advice to go at opening time as we didn't want to be too rushed to get there from Lisbon. At 8:30 am we took a Bolt from our Lisbon hotel to Quinta da Regaleira, but admired it from outside as tickets were already sold out the previous day for the time slot we needed. Not far from Q da Regaleira, while walking towards the Pena Palace, we noticed a sign at the entrance of a driveway for Biester Palace which we visited as we (being teachers) were granted free admission. It was an interesting enjoyable consolation prize for missing out on Q da R.
Another Bolt ride took us to the gate of the Pena Palace Gardens where we took their shuttle to the Palace entrance. There was just enough time to buy sandwiches at their upper level cafeteria, eat and tour the gardens a bit before the rain began. At exactly 1:30 pm the gatekeeper began admitting visitors. We joined the queue several minutes before our time slot. IMHO it is worth visiting the interior. I had hoped to visit the gardens only but my husband really wanted to see the interior. From the Pena Palace, it was a short, easy walk down to the entrance to the Moorish Castle, a definite highlight. Luckily, the rain had stopped. Amazing views! From there, the bus took us to the historic centre of charming Sintra. If you like fruit juice, order the tropical smoothie at Café de Paris. It's enormous and delicious! We took the train back to Lisbon. I could go on at length about Sintra, but won't bore you with any further details.
