While in Lisbon, we are staying in Barrio Alto and planning on a day trip to Belem. What might be the best way to get there (we are near the train station but Rick mentions a trolley)? Does it pay to get tickets in advance for the Monastery? I know there are long lines for admittance. What other sites would you recommend and how should we logistically arrange the day?
There is a trolley, however, getting on is a hassle as several hundred others will be attempting the same thing. We(4 of us) managed to be standing in the right spot when it stopped, so that's how we went, however, we took a cab back for €10. We didn't get advanced tickets for the Monastery as we weren't sure what day we were going, and yes, the line can be really long.Don't
overlook touring the church too, as there is a separate entrance to it. Also, once inside the Monastery, when you go up to the 2nd floor, there is a small entrance on the street side to the choir loft of the church and its worth the time for the view of the church and the stained glass. After your visit, be sure to walk out and turn right, and follow the sidewalk to the famous creator of the those delicious custards. WE finished off our day by stopping at the ferry terminal and taking it across the river. When you exit the ferry, turn right and walk about 15 minutes along the river to the Point Final resturant for some terrific seafood.
Take a taxi. Taxis are cheap in Lisbon.
