Wondering how "closed" Portugal is at Christmas? Expecting museums to be closed 12/24 and 12/25, but what about restaurants in major tourist areas? Any thoughts on travel at this time of year -- we are a group of 6 with 4 young adult children) -- enjoy a mix of museums, culture and outdoor activities/scenic areas. Getting everyone available at same time is challenge. We have some flexibility - aiming for 8 nights somewhere between 12/18 and 12/31. Thanks in advance for any tips.
Nothing is closed except for Christmas and New Year’s Day. A lot of things close early on Christmas Eve.
Things are very nice during the holiday season. The towns and cities decorate and have Christmas markets. The restaurants do big business during the season and museums and sites only close Christmas Day.
The only downside is a higher possibility of rain and cooler weather.
All this said, the smaller places in the Algarve are more likely to close for a lot of the winter. But, there are lovely beaches between Lisbon and Porto, if you want a beach fix.
For only eight days, I would recommend splitting your time between Lisbon and Porto, with a possible overnight someplace between.
