Conimbriga

If you have seen the ruins of Pompeii and the mosaics at Villa Romana Casale in Sicily how high a priority would you place on a visit to Conimbriga? Thanks for your opinion.

I've seen both Pompeii and Villa Romana Casale, and just returned from Conimbriga. We found Conimbriga very interesting. It's very accessible - you walk right through the "city" and right into the "buildings" Mosaics are amazing. The site is quite spread out, with limited signage. It would be beneficial to see what info you can find online to help you understand what you are looking at. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to visit the site, but if you have a car and are going to be near Coimbra I would visit.

Not a going-out-of-your-way visit, but still worth seeing. Look on their website calendar: by chance we hit their Roman days festival - re-enactor soldiers, miscreants, fair maidens, craftspeople & vendors, barbarians in furs (with perfect Goth shaved heads & tattoos, nothin' new under the sun), goose herders, horses, dogs... Lively & fun. It's a very compact site versus Pompeii (what wouldn't be), & the mosaics are good but lesser than Villa RC's (ditto). The museum's good, there's a cafe, & the whole place says, yup, the Romans were here & they knew how to do things.
