Confused about rental car size needed.

I'm looking to rent a car at Lisbon airport for my husband and me. We will each have a regular size suitcase and a carry on. I want to fit all the luggage in the trunk so it's not visible when we make stops. I see a compact and a midsize car that says it's for 4-5 passengers and 2 large pieces and 1 small piece of luggage. How to 4-5 passengers have this amount of luggage? Since it doesn't show what kind of car it is, I'm having a hard time figuring out what kind of car I need. Am I just not understanding this?

It is confusing and will depend on the size of your luggage. If your checked regular bags are 50 pounders each, you will probably not have room in the trunk of a 4-5 passenger compact. My wife & I carry backpacks or something that will fit in the overhead bin of the plane plus a 25-30 pound smaller checked bag. This is good for two weeks or more of travel for us.

Thank you so much for your reply! I was able to talk to someone from Europcar who helped me and assured me that although most of the midsize cars are hatchbacks, they have a cover so the luggage can not be seen. I am trying very hard to "travel light" and cut down on the size of my luggage, but I'm not sure just yet how successful I will be. Thanks again for your reply!
