We are considering going to Coimbra the first week of September. The uni term is likely to start on the 14th with freshers week being the week before. We like places to be lively with a good night life. Is it likely to be quiet the first week of September as the students will not yet have arrived?

We visited there 8-11 September 2023. The university was quiet, but I never looked to see if classes were in session.
Not sure what type night life you’re looking for.
In the remainder of the town much of the activity occurred along R. Ferreira Borges over to 8th of May plaza. During our visit there was a traditional folk dancing festival or competition of some sort. There were probably 8 or 9 dance groups from neighboring towns that participated. Next to the plaza is cafe Santa Cruz where there were free nightly fado performances. The cafe/bar was cash only.
