Central Portugal

Planning a trip to Portugal in June with my husband, our 9 year old son, and my parents. Will be spending 4 nights in Lisbon (went 10 years ago and loved it!) My challenge is the remaining 4 nights. My initial thought is an Airbnb near San Martinho do Porto and doing day trips from there ( Batalha, Obidos, Tomar, etc.) My concern is whether it will be too long in one spot. Is Tomar or Coimbra worth a night or two (and specifically with a 9 year old)?

General itinerary suggestions, towns/sites to visit are also much appreciated! Thinking my son would love Almoural Castle.

Or do we bag all this and go to Porto from Lisbon?! So many options.

Thank you!!

If you decide to stay in central Portugal area check out the Dino Park in Lourinha for your son. It’s near Obidos.

I, personally, don’t think it’s too long in one place, but I am an advocate of slower travel to really enjoy one place. Nine years ago, before moving here, I stayed a week in Sao Martinho do Porto and really enjoyed it. We visited the places you mentioned and more. Sao Martinho is a nice town with a number of good restaurants and is close to Foz, which has a couple of good beach side restaurants.
One nice thing about the town is the horseshoe bay. It makes the water extremely calm and is ideal for children. While the water will be a bit cold that time of the year, your son could play at waters edge without worry.

Almourol is nice but there are zero safety measures in place, so you would really need to watch him carefully. Try to take a boat and approach the ruin from the water.

I really like Alcobaça, maybe a bit more than Batalha.
