We are looking into various locations to base ourselves for a few days. The area around Castelo de Vide looks interesting with various landscapes, castles and neolithic structures near the Spanish border. Has anyone spent much time in this area and could provide some advice about the town and area? We'll be in Portugal for several weeks and like the "hub and spoke" type of travel/exploring.
The closest I came was the Alcantara area of Spain in Tajo national park, but if the landscapes are similar, you are in for a treat. That area was really gorgeous.
Definitely plenty of burial chambers in that area, but I know nothing else about it. The burial chambers extend into Spain. I spent a few days further north at Penalva do Castelo. Seems to me that after seeing a few burial chambers they will all look the same. Later this year as part of a visit to Spain’s Extremadura region we’ll cross into Portugal to see the stone/boulder homes in Monsanto. Unfortunately because of its location in relation to Castelo de Vide it’s an almost two hour drive. An hour from Castelo de Vide is Elvas and its fortifications. Also an hour away in Spain is Cáceres and Alcántara. Prior to Cáceres is the Natural Monument Los Barruecos.
Not Castelo de Vide, but larger, is Castelo Branco. I was looking at it last year as a place to stay. There may be more options for lodging and restaurants, but it is further from the burial chambers.
