CascaisYes or No for Beach stay without traveling down South

Hello, we are traveling in June and do not have time to go all the way south to the beautiful beaches there. Looking for a base for 3 nights to enjoy a little relaxation on the water. Would you suggest this is a good location. If so please let me know the reasons why or why not or if you reccommend another place instead. Thank you so much!

The beach in Cascais is fine but it is not the best, although it is really fine for relaxing. The better (as in, more scenic) beaches are a few km to the west (Guincho beach for example), easily reached but still adds a bit of complexity. The town of Cascais is quite pleasant, so all in all it is a good spot, but I do prefer Ericeira a bit further north. Still easily reached from Lisbon, with beautiful Mafra palace nearby for some sightseeing, and with spectacular beaches right in town.
The water will be cold. And, except in Cascais proper, it is likely to be rough as well.

To summarize: Cascais is a good spot and if you find a hotel you like, you can go for it, but I do prefer Ericeira and I suggest you have a look at it.

Will you have a car? Cascais is very doable without one, as I’ve lived here for seven years without a car. And, Guincho, outside of town is quite lovely. It’s reachable by bus or inexpensive Uber ride. There are smaller beaches in town, but not as beautiful. Cascais is a very easy train ride from Lisbon.

I also like Ericeira as another option. But, you really need a car. I’ve not spent much time in Ericeira but it appears to not have as many restaurants - if that is important. But, in both towns you will find great fish as both are fishing villages.

I’d say that Cascais would be a lovely place to relax for a few days. It won’t offer you a typical ‘beach’ holiday but you’re by the sea and there are lots of good restaurants. It’s a nice place to be. In June it possibly won’t be warm enough to lie on the beach anyway.

thank you so much for your thoughts. We will have a car and we will be driving from Douro Valley. We have 3 nights to relax on the water and will end our trip with 3 nights in Lisbon. Anything along the way is fine with us. We would love if we could pair a cute city with food option next to a lovely beach but we are also fine with taking a little drive to get there. Ericeira looks beautiful. So that would be everyones top pick for option with a car?

I would encourage you to look at pictures and read a bit about both towns before deciding. With three days, Cascais will give you more options for different beaches, dune walks, etc. Ericeira would likely be quieter but you could reach Mafra easily if you get bored. It really depends on your preferences.
