Cascais Mercado

I received a private message and for some reason, the site won’t let me respond. So, I’m going to respond here.

It was a question about Pão com Chorizo at the Cascais Mercado. Yes, it’s still available from a bakery at the Mercado and is still very good! The bread also shows up at festivals from a food truck, but it’s not as good as the Mercado.

Enjoy your trip back and I’m certain you will find many changes. We have way too many tacky tourist shops and very expensive condos. But, the old town is still charming with a large number of restaurants of many cuisines. It’s still a great place to live.

Oh my goodness, thank you for making this a post. I knew you'd reply, but didn't realize you couldn't reply directly.

SO excited to hear the Pão com Chorizo is still available. Do they only have it on Wednesdays and Saturdays? What are the hours? Can you send an address?

Can you also tell me if the Roulote Hot Dogs operates year round? This too was a tradition when we lived there, but it was far more basic without real tables or anything. Just the truck and some chairs at the edge of the ocean. I also read they might now be more permanent at the casa da Guia?

Maybe now that I have made a post you can reply directly?

Just wondering, with the Mercado operating only 2 days a week, where do people buy the freshest fish and best meat and produce the rest of the time. Are there butchers and fish mongers?

Hoping for a reunion in 2026,
Dennis and Elinore

The fish market and the talhos are open six days a week. It’s just the produce people who are only there three days a week. During Covid, they started also having it open on Sunday as well as Wednesday and Saturday. The fish market is open Sunday also but the talhos are closed. The fish market is closed Monday as the fisherman don’t fish on Sunday. For produce, all the supermarkets have fresh produce if you need something on the days it’s closed.

There are also a number of small shops open every day. A bakery, French cheese shop, Italian market, nut and dried fruit shop, etc. The Mercado is such an integral part of the town. I can’t imagine living without it.
