Car rental - Porto or Coimbra? Faro or Libson drop off?

A couple questions RE: car rental in Portugal.

1) Is there much difference between Porto and Coimbra in terms of vehicle availability? I would strongly prefer automatic transmission (yes, I know it's more expensive). I like the idea of taking the train to Coimbra and picking up there, but if Porto is more likely to have a vehicle with an automatic, I would pick up there instead.

2) How bad is the morning rush hour traffic around Lisbon driving north toward the Humberto Delgado airport? I am coming from the south (leaving from Aljuezur) and passing through/near Lisbon between 8 and 9 on a Friday (Flight leaves at 12:50). I wouldn't be driving into the city--just directly to the airport.

Context: After picking up a car in Porto or Coimbra, driving south to Algarve/Costa Vicentina for 4 nights. Staying near Aljezur. The drop off options: drive an hour-ish to Faro airport to catch a 6 a.m. flight to Lisbon. I like the idea of not driving in/near Lisbon. However, the Faro flight to Lisbon leaves at 6 a.m., which means getting much less sleep and spending almost 6 hours sitting in the Lisbon airport. The more appealing option (per 2 above) is simply driving the 3 hours (so says Google maps - is that accurate?) north to Lisbon and dropping the car off at the airport.

My guess is there would be a better vehicle selection at Porto airport with a better chance of having an automatic available.

If returning to Faro check to see if the rental company would even be open at the time you’d need to drop it off. I’d just deal with any traffic near Lisbon airport. You could also drive north and drop the car off the day before your return flight and stay near the airport your last night. I wouldn’t want a three hour drive the day of a return flight.

The traffic around the airport is pretty awful during the time you would be driving in the area. Could you take the train? I would definitely check to see if that was an option rather than drive in Lisbon rush hour. Oriente station is very close to the airport - either on the metro or by Uber.

Check out Zestcarrental.com for various permutations of pickup and drop off.

Email Zest to discuss dropoff at airport. They can arrange for person to meet you to pickup car from you at the airport parking lot. Or, they might just tell you to park it and notify them as to which spot you left the car.

If you have to catch the international flight from Lisbon to go home, I would be more inclined to drive from the Algarve directly to LIS instead of driving an hour to FAO to catch the 6:00 a.m. connecting flight to LIS. That would save a lot of time and extra cost for flights.

The drive from the Algarve will be mostly on toll freeways which are fast and easy to drive. You can avoid driving through downtown Lisbon by taking the Vasco da Gama bridge.

Good luck.
