We are planning on renting a car on our trip from Lisbon to Porto. I have read from other posts to rent a car outside of Lisbon. Can anyone provide a recommendation on where "outside" of Lisbon to rent a car? We were thinking of renting the car at the airport, but after reading a few posts I am giving it second thoughts. Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

It depends on what you want to see between the two cities. Coimbra is about half way and the driving is pretty easy. You do need to take a taxi from the train station to the car rental but it’s a short ride. The train from Lisbon to Coimbra is inexpensive.
But, if you wasn’t to visit Obidos on the way, Coimbra isn’t a good choice. Cascais is outside of Lisbon and the Europcar agency is almost right across from the train station. But, with the one way streets here in Cascais, driving can be a bit tricky. If you have GPS, it would work well. And, taking the train here from Lisbon is easy and inexpensive.
