car rental mini vs economy for Portugal Roadtrip

I am taking a 9 day road trip with my husband leaving Lisbon to Évora, Nazaré, Coimbra, outside Unhais Da Serra, Vale do Douro and dropping car off at Porto. Seems it would be better to get an economy care considering I will be driving a lot and do not plan to be driving in big cities. Any helpful tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Portugal, but I've driven quite a bit through other areas of Europe, and have found that the smaller cars are much easier to maneuver on the roads. Many European roads can be very narrow in places and not well kept.

You save money on gas with a smaller car (and gas is much more expensive in Europe); and since it's just you and your husband, you don't need a lot of room for luggage, either. I usually get an economy size, which is one step up from a mini and have never had any problems.

I usually rent with AutoEurope, although it does pay to check around. But Auto Europe is a consolidator that will give you a lot of options when you are looking for a car.
