Planning to rent a car in Portugal. Plan to get travel insurance.
Are there any traveller's insurance policies that cover liability for other party and their car etc.?
I always contact Andy at Gemut.com. They have a very extensive packet of information on everything you need to know about car rentals. I would also look at Rick's information as well. Andy also helped me with my rental for Portugal in April/May.
Hope this helps.
Thanks! I'll definitely give them a call.
Another recommendation for Andy @ Gemut. A fount of knowledge. They are located in Oregon so keep that in mind re: time of call. The website has a great pdf for driving in Europe.
Liability insurance for "the other party" and their car is legally required and is therefore included in most European car rentals. It's coverage of your rental car itself that is usually sold separately. See https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/car-rental-cdw and www.autoeurope.com/insurancedetail.cfm, but then also read the fine print on any rental contract.
Thank you to Steve, Laura and Sherry. I called Andy at Gamut and he was very helpful.
I have an American Express card and AmEx has a plan that you can sign up for that every time you rent a car using your AmEx card, you are covered for the damage or theft of the rental car, so you don't have to pay the ridiculous insurance that the rental car companies charge. The fee is very reasonable, something like $50-$60 for the entire period of the rental.
