Car rental in Portugal

My friends and I are planning to rent a car for a few days in Portugal. There are 5 of us which limits the number of options. My concern is that when I find cars with the capacity for 5, it shows it only holds a couple bags. This has me a bit confused because several of the choices are cars I am familiar with and I know they can hold more than a couple bags in their trunks. I am trying to encourage everyone to travel with carry-ons only. Do you think we will fit?

Topping so hopefully you'll find someone with personal experience.
One hiccup is that there is not a guarantee of what car you will get. I think 5 carry-on size suitcases would be a very tight fit unless you pay more for a larger car. All you can really do is scope out the trunk specs for the cars on offer and hope for the best.
Do you plan to do a lot of stopovers where luggage will be left in the car?
