Simple question: do I need to buy extra car insurance for my rental car that I’ll be picking up in Lisbon? We don’t want to buy more than we need, but yet, don’t want to be caught with only minimal insurance that will hit us hard if we damage the car ( that has never happened). Any advice?
You should carefully read what insurance is included and what coverage through your credit card, travel insurance, or even if your personal car insurance covers rentals, then decide if it's enough.
You should look at this summary from here on the RS website:

Decisions, decisions. Get what you’re comfortable with. Most basic CDW will have a deductible while zero deductible comes at a price. Then there’s road hazard if case you mess up a tire, or windshield damage in a case stone gets thrown up from the vehicle ahead of you. Other optional insurances can be theft and personal injury protection (in case you hit a person). Included coverages differ from company to company, so ensure you know what you’re getting.
