Bringing Medication into Portugal

Hi all,
I just have a quick question regarding medication. I'll be traveling to Portugal this summer with my girlfriend for six weeks. We both take antidepressants. Do we need to do anything other than carry the medication in their original bottles with the labels on them? Do we need doctors' notes? Anything I've found so far has pointed to a) European countries are generally relaxed about medications as long as they aren't certain controlled substances b) the chances of anyone saying anything is highly unlikely c) the original bottle is just fine. But I just want to be certain. Any info I've found about bringing medicine to Portugal just says "enough for personal use". Is it really this laid back? Any advice or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, it really is that laid back. I just read another post about a traveller returning to Canada having to fill in a customs declaration. No such thing (here). You just pick up your bag and walk through the green "nothing to declare" door. Unless you look suspicious you stand <1% chance of being stopped.
Even if you are stopped, they know the difference between enough prescription medicines for a few days, and illegal drugs. Do you have the note the doctor gave you explaining what to take, or is it on a label on the box? I have a copy of the prescription on my phone detailing the dosage, that would be plenty.

Thanks so much for your reply!

So I don't even really have to declare it? And all I have is the plastic bottle from the pharmacy with the label on it detailing the dosage, number of pills. and the doctor who ordered etc. I don't have a letter explaining anything if that is what you are asking. I don't have a copy of the prescription, but the information on the label says anything anyone would need to know about what the medication is.

Correct, you don't have to declare medicines. In the unlikely event you are stopped in customs (<1%), the fact that you have a label from the pharmacy on the bottle will be enough. I don't even carry the bottles, Just one of those plastic trays that says "Monday, Tuesday" etc.

Whether your home country's customs will be interested on your return is another matter, you don't say where you come from, so I can't comment.

This is great information thank you so much. I'm from Connecticut, USA. In my experience coming through customs here is not a problem so I'm not worried about that. The agents are surly as ever and as long as you go about your business things are fine. Especially in Boston.

Since moving to Portugal, I've come back into the country numerous times traveling around Europe and back to the U.S. I've never been stopped and always carry my medication in a seven day pill case rather than the pharmacy bottle.. To be certain, bring your pharmacy bottle - but don't worry. You could even likely take that bottle to a pharmacia while here and buy more for a fraction of what it costs in the States! This is one thing to definitely check off your list of worries.

You shouldn't have any trouble, especially in Portugal as it has a very "relaxed" policy towards drugs. The medication is prescribed by a Doctor and is for personal use and not being imported for distribution or whatever, so I wouldn't even mention it.

Hi:
Just to be Safe, we went to our Pharmacy and asked for a printout of our Meds (it's free) before we left for Portugal as I was advised to do this, while travelling to Europe. The worst thing you want is all your Meds confiscated, even though chances are slim, but you never know, always good to play Safe!
