I am planning to take a pair of Birkie sandals as my alternative footwear. Are they non-slip on cobblestones? I’ve mostly worn them on hot, dry days, so can’t judge.
My wife's whole footwear closet is Birkenstocks. Spring and summer trips and even the Xmas markets (winter style). She has double knee replacements and wears them before and after surgery. No slipping or sliding on anything. When I met her over 50 years ago she would wear flip flops. LOL
While the tread on a new pair are decent enough to keep you from slipping on some surfaces, the lack of an ankle strap on many models means they really aren't going to prevent your foot from twisting on uneven surfaces. Some cobblestones are more uneven than others. If your birks have an ankle strap, then you could be OK.
@Lifetimetravel your wife is a woman after my own heart! I did not wear any shoes until I was about 12, and as a consequence my feet are wide and flat. I’ve managed to make do with WW shoes and arch supports, but Birkenstocks are my jam. Thanks for the reassurance.
I wear my Mayari Birkenstock sandals most of the year and everywhere in Europe. No ankle strap but they do not slip. They are very secure and work on cobblestones as well as any tennis shoe, which i also wear.
Same - I wear Birks ten months out of the year. Have worn them many times on cobblestones - mostly Arizona, Gizeh and Mayari. I have been eyeballing the Madrid style, but those do look like they might be a hazard on cobblestones, as cute as they are.
I found the sidewalks in Lisbon to be very slippery, especially when it rains. Make sure you have shoes with good grip.
A lot of sidewalks in Lisbon are on steep hills, but my Mayari Birkenstocks do just as well on hills as any tennis shoe. I’ve hiked in the Swiss Alps in them.
