Hi we are staying 5 nights in Lisbon and 5 nights in Porto, and I have one night in between that I haven’t booked a hotel yet. The plan was to take the train from Lisbon to Porto. I would like to see Tomar. I don’t think we will have a car, so I’m wondering: (i) private tour to/from Lisbon or Porto? Or (ii) private driver, in order to stop in several places, to/from Lisbon or Porto? Or (iii) just stay in Tomar or somewhere nearby? Any thoughts/ suggestions?
If you're taking public transit, the easiest is to take the bus from Lisbon ( Sete Rios) to Tomar and from Tomar to Porto (Campanhã).
Use Redeexpressos official site.

It's possible to take train but it takes longer between Tomar and Porto and requires several transfers.

We recently did this trip
In order to stop and see few places we were interested in, we used services of Fernando Batista of PortugalChauffeur.com
We were extremely happy with the flexibility and the professional service we received
Many of our neighbors and friends have used same service and were happy too.
I found it easy to take a train from Lisbon (Santa Apolonia) to Tomar. I stayed one night in Tomar. From Tomar to Porto, I changed trains at Entroncamento (and Porto Camphana). I don't remember if I compared train and bus options. I agree that if you want to stop several places with just one day, a car or private driver would be good.
