I am wondering what is the best way to find a Fado show to take my wife and little one (6 years old) - I like the idea of the more informal type options where you can grab a drink and come and go - vs buying a expensive ticket and having the little one throw a fit / get tired, etc and need to go home

Listening to fado normally occurs at night. Six year olds like nursery rhimes not fado so I don't recommend it.
you don't know my daughter then! haha - she loves music, and with the time change, she will be up nice and late on our trip.

I seriously hope you reconsider bringing a 6-year-old to a fado show. The Portuguese take their national music style very seriously.
Not only may your daughter not enjoy it, but the other patrons may think it inconsiderate.
(I think at this time, we Americans need to put our best foot forward when traveling. Just my opinion)

please do not take this as argumentative in anyway- bc I do agree with the last part of your post, and do not like the direction of our country right now, but politics aside,
What is wrong with trying to exposure our little one to various cultures? Maybe I am missing the boat (and please let me know if I am) - but if she is in the slightest bit disruptive, we would remove ourselves. Maybe the atmosphere is different that what I am imagining (this is our first trip to Portugal). On a scale from fancy opera were everybody is hush hush, to an irish pub where people are gathering around listening to music and enjoying a pint, where does a typical Fardo show fall on that spectrum?
We have been to lots of different music type venues around the US and Europe with her, and have zero interest in being disrespectufl in the least, so just trying to understand how a show works.
Closer to opera than to an Irish pub
There is the Museum of Fado in the Alfama where she can learn about the art and hear recorded selections. That might be a better way all around.
