Best day trips in North & Central Portugal

Hello! We are planning a combined Spain and Portugal trip in the Fall. For the Portugal portion of our trip, we are in a quandary, trying to plan what would be our priority day trips. For example, if you could choose only one location, would a day visit to Braga or Guimaraes be the most scenic from Porto (after a day visiting the Douro wine area?).

In addition to a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, if we had time for only three other day trips which would be your best choices from the following: Evora, Obidos, Tomar and Alcobaca?

We were also thinking of spending two nights in Coimbra, particularly to visit the university there. However, We were also thinking of visiting the University of Salamanca in Spain earlier in our trip. If we visit Salamanca, is there too much similarity for a visit to Coimbra?

Last, has anyone participated in "treading" or stomping the grapes along with the locals in the Douro Valley at harvest time, or is it too touristy? Thanks for your advice!

We spent several days in Guimares, the first capital of Portugal. There is lots to do and see. The Minho region where Braga and Guimares are located, was our favorite part of Portugal.
Day trips Evora and Alcobaça would be my choices. If you can easily see Obidos en route to Evora, then do it. Obidos is pretty, quite small, an hour would be enough, but is one of those places totally given over to tourism. Coimbra is also a very interesting small city.
Before visiting Alcobaça, read the love story of King Pedro and his Ines whose tombs are there.
A rather amazing story!

Thanks Suki! To visit Braga and Guimaraes, did you travel by local bus or car? And did you spend a night in one of those towns or did you commute from Porto? Was Tomar not that interesting to visit, and would you recommend more nights in the Minho region instead of Coimbra if scheduling is an issue? I read the saga of Innes and Pedro - wild story! Again, thanks.
