We are spending 3-4 days in Porto in late August, flying there from Geneva. What is the best way to see the Douro River Valley and also enjoy a nice lunch or winery visit? Doable in 1 day or should we plan an overnight somewhere? What are your recommendations for overnight accommodations? Is the train to Pinhao nice; should we stick to a river cruise; or rent a car? There are 4 traveling.
Ruth - The train to Pinhao is nice as well as the town. Do an overnight trip to the Douro Valley. It merits that. Use a car rental so you can tour to many villages there and touring some wineries. Lamego would be ideal to stay for winery exploration in the Douro.
R Jean got it right.
Take the train to Pinhao, the tracks run along the north side of the river.
If you can stay at the In Patio Guesthouse in Porto, do so, it is wonderful.
