Best City or Town in the Algarve to Stay in the Winter (March) using Public Transportation?

Hello! We are five older women travelling via train and/or bus from Porto (4 nights) to Lisbon (5 nights) to the Algarve. Staying three nights in the Algarve, but in the winter, March 2024. Then returning to Lisbon one night for our plane home.

I would like to ask which city or town center would be the best to pick? We will be walking mostly. And then we will take a tour around the Algarve area. I have been looking so far in Lagos and Faro. I know Rick likes Salema, but others do not.

Thank you! Teresa

I would choose Lagos because it's beachfront versus Faro - the beach is on a barrier island.

Faro is more central if you take tours both east and west of Faro, and it's the terminus for the AP train ( from Lagos you'll have to connect to the train from Faro to Lisbon).

We were there (Faro) this past March, the storks were nesting everywhere, if you go look up at steeples, chimneys, light poles, we could hear their clack clack of courtship before we saw them

Thank you so much! I already saw a beautiful hotel in Lagos with a water View and if that's in the city center that would be great!

I don’t think Lagos is big enough to be an city, only a town. It’s not a huge place but I think in America you call any urban area a city which is not the case in Europe. But yes it would be great for your purposes. The Algarve is sunny all year round so a good choice for March.

Great, thanks much... yes as a native of New York City I get your drift. But a decent sized town is fine we just don't want to be out in the country because we do not have a car. We hope we will have a couple of Tours through the countryside. Thanks for writing!
