Best Car Rental Companies for Pickup Lisbon and Return in Porto

My husband and I plan to drive from Lisbon to Porto one day in July, allowing us to stop a couple of places for a little sightseeing and lunch on the way. I have been searching and finding prices all over the place, many of which are quite pricey. And some of the companies that offer cars I have never heard of. Has anyone rented a car for such a trip and had a good, easy, affordable experience? If so, could you please share the company you used? Thank you!

Try Auto Europe. It’s a consolidator and recommended by RS. I’ve used them for 20 years and never had a bad experience. They give you several choices from which to choose. And, yes, there are cars in Europe that you don’t see in the U.S.

I just booked with Tangerine - I needed a large minivan. Does anyone have good or bad experiences to share with them and any watchouts ?

Auto Europe was a good suggestion, but their least expensive car is $300-for one day. And that doesn't include a fee for dropping off at a different location. What I meant was some of the rental companies are companies I never heard of. For example, Green Motion or U Save. More affordable, but are they any good?

I read advice on this forum for Zest Rental, and we used them twice in 2023: once from Porto to Peneda Geres and back; second to pick up in Faro and drop off at Lisbon Airport. Zest is an aggregator, and shows different companies and their prices, and ratings by customers.. They also offer rental insurance. The Porto one was a 'mystery' offer, and turned out to be Hertz. The Faro/Lisbon one was a company that I think was called Master Kings. Their car was an older Audi, with slow acceleration, but operated fine (my husband had always admired the Audi's looks; this dissuaded him completely from ever owning one). Hertz, of course, was fine. MasterKings was great. Their dropoff was outside the airport, but they have a shuttle. Would definitely use Zest again in Portugal.
