Best Beach in May

Hi,
I am just starting to plan our Portugal trip for May. We will be flying in and out of Porto and staying in Portugal for 11 days including travel days. We would like to visit Porto and Lisbon and I was thinking we would go to the Algarve region, but after reading more, it sounds like there are nice beaches closer to Lisbon. We love coastal towns, great food and wine, hiking, and history. We did an 11 day trip last year to Tuscany and ended in Cinque Terre (stayed in Monterosso del Mar) and absolutely loved it. We relaxed on the beach every day, hiked, took a boat tour and ate amazing food. Would love to stay in another cute coastal town in Portugal. Thank you for any advice in advance.

Because Portuguese beaches are on the Atlantic Ocean. the sea water temps are extremely cold. Take a look at Cascais— a coastal town just outside of Lisbon—for your day at the beach. I was in Portugal in September years ago and, although the air temperature was in the triple digits, I was surprised to see there were very few people actually swimming. Although September is the warmest month to swim at Cascais, the water temperature runs about 66’ to 68’.
In May the water temperature runs between 61’ and 65’.
