We are already doing planning for a trip to Lisbon in April 2026. We plan to spend maybe 4 or 5 nights in Lisbon. Suggestions for atmospheric area of the city to book an apartment.
Good locations include: Barrio Alto , Chiado and
Baixa. Lisbon is a wonderful city to explore!
Make sure you pack good walking shoes.
We stayed in Chiado close to Carmo and loved the location.
David,
On our 4 visits we have always stayed in the Pricipe Real area. Specifically around the Praca da flores.
It a little neighborhood not YET totally overrun. It is easy to get to any part of Lisbon, yet you will be tempted to just hang in the praca with your bica
Dennis and Elinore
We just got back from Portugal last week. We stayed in an Airbnb in the Alfama district. The area is quaint and hilly with small streets, some good restaurants. Uber is not allowed into the area, and although taxis are allowed, some don't love going into the area (we never had one that refused though). I broke my foot during my trip, before getting to Lisbon, so this clouded my opinion somewhat, but I would recommend a different area. We stayed in Bairro Alto last trip, and I think it is a better option (with or without a broken foot).
Baixa-Chiado is a good area in regards to easy transportation options and location. This is the area I normally stay in. Alfama was not destroyed and rebuilt due to the 1755 earthquake. It's an interesting area to walk around with the narrow, twisting streets, but if staying there, you need to be comfortable doing a lot of walking. Perhaps Alfama would fit the atmospheric criteria. Also Mouraria is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon close to Alfama and the two neighborhoods have a lot of street art, which I really enjoy. Between the azulejos (tiles) and murals, it's like an open air art museum.
