Beer in Portugal?

I know, I know, I'm heading to the land of wine. I'm sure I will be having plenty of wine while in Lisbon/Azores (Sao Miguel)/Porto. However, I'm a beer guy. Anyone have favorite beers/breweries in those areas? We are doing a Craft Beer tour in Porto while we are there, but would love to hear about what folks enjoyed!

I can not speak for Portugal, keep planning a trip, but also keep pushing it out, been to Spain 3 times, so maybe a parallel. Craft beers in both Spain and Portugal are young. Expect to find them, but quality uneven. Beer styles will be mostly safe, do not expect big hoppy brews, probably some lagers, ambers, browns, and stouts. They also have big volume breweries (beer is actually a very popular beverage in Spain, above the UK, US and Belgium per capita, Portugal though is about a third less) but to be honest those beers are on par with Bud and Miller Lite.

I would look into some sites and apps, Beer Advocate is pretty good for listing breweries and bars selling good beer. Untapped, an app is good for seeing what is being drunk locally and for finding venues where you are at, and then just Google searches turn up lots of options.

Just returned from nearly three weeks in Portugal. Craft beers are hard to find in Portugal. Most places, unfortunately, only offer either Super Bock or Sagres, both light, lager beers. And they generally just offered one or the other - like Coke and Pepsi. This was one of the very few disappointments we had in Portugal. Over all, it was a fantastic experience....just not a beer-lovers paradise.

In my limited one trip experience, my impression is that there are plenty of beer drinkers in Portugal, beer is certainly popular and very much part of the culture for holidays like Sao Joao's festival in Porto, but it is the Super Bock and Sagres already mentioned. I read that both brands do produce some darker varieties but, I don't remember seeing it, at least not on tap.

We had a lot of great wine in Portugal but we found some good beers too. In Porto we loved Fabrica Nortada a brew pub with great beers. In Lisbon we stayed right by a brew pub called Canil. Very good beer. We also came across a local IPA bottle that was very good - it had a green label with a guy with an eye patch, I forget the name.

Hi from Wisconsin,
Portuguese wine is excellent and so inexpensive I want to move there. Their beer is good too. I had no problem with their beer. Typically it is crisp, clean and smooth. If you want great beer you have to go in to rural Czech Republic.
You won't be disappointed if you drink the beer in Portugal.

Craft beer...a fad about to fade. Gin and whiskey is the new craft drink.

I am flying to Lisbon tonight, but my advance planning shows a place called Duque Brewpub. The photo on Yelp shows IPAs and APAs on the menu.
