Azores Weather- I thought it was tropical??

A current forecast says 65-70 and cloudy for the next week- leaving tomorrow!
Any advice on packing? I really thought I was going to a warm paradise. (My friend made all the arrangements).

You haven't done your homework. Temperatures in the Azores rarely reach 80 degrees F. They might get in the mid 70s in summer, but most of the year they are in the 60s during the day and 50s at night. Pleasantly cool, even in winter, but definitely not tropical.

You always have to be ready for rain. It has been quite rainy for most of the islands the past few weeks. It happens.

It will surely be humid, so bring light layers, a rain jacket with a hood, and a small umbrella that will fit in a day bag.

The weather can be terrible on one side of an island or splendid on another part. Elevation can also play a part. Each island can be totally different from all the rest, including a neighboring island.

At the top of this Portugal forum is a link to my “Freemium Azores Guide”. In it I have a section on page 37 that explains the weather in the Azores in greater detail. Make use of the webcams found all over the islands as you plan your day or as your days unfold.

I checked the 10 day forecast for Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel and it does not look too bad to me. Santa Maria, the closest island to it, looks wonderful. Terceira does not look good. There are lots of indoor sites to visit in Sao Miguel and Terceira, if you are visiting those islands.

I hope you have a wonderful trip with whatever weather you encounter.

I know that many factors, besides latitude, affect a place's climate, but for the record, the Azores islands are about the same latitude as Washington DC -- well outside the tropics.

My grandparents are from the Azores and I've always heard that you can experience all four seasons in one day. Enjoy!
