Azores travel in 2025

I'm trying to plan a trip to the Azores from Toronto in June, on our way to mainland Portugal. I may give up because I'm struggling to find solid info, and I don't have time to spend hours and hours working on this. Everyone raves about the Azores guide at the top of this forum, but it's a link to Kindle. I don't own a Kindle. Is there any other way to read it?

BTW the newly published Lonely Planet Azores book was useless. It tells me highlights of each island, but not how to get to the islands, how much time to allow for interisland travel, or any suggested itineraries. I usually like Lonely Planet but this one was a bust

What it says with the above guide is that you don't need to own a kindle, just to install the Kindle app on your device or computer.
I disagree about Lonely Planet. I have just been reading parts of the book on line. It gives links to inter island air and ferry schedules, even to bus schedules on all the islands. if you don't rent a car.
The Visit Azores website also has a lot of information.
Azores Airlines fly direct from Toronto to Ponta Delgada Airport in season.
On to Portugal you have TAP, Azores Air, and Ryanair.

All that airline info is in LP, although there are other ways to find it.

You need to decide how long you want to spend there - a day, a week, a month whatever then build a plan round that. A few days can only ever be an edited highlights visit, not a comprehensive one.

“, but not how to get to the islands, how much time to allow for interisland travel, or any suggested itineraries.”

Thinking like that then perhaps it would be best to go to a travel agent. Especially if you don’t have hours and hours. Otherwise you have to seek out that info, which is not overly hard to do.
If you get replies here then you will also surely have to get that info and spend hours and hours anyway.

You do not need a Kindle to access my full Azores guide, or the first 52 pages. Those pages are absolutely free to read. They also include all the logistical information you are searching for.

As a previous poster replied, you only need to install the Kindle app to your electronic device (computer, tablet, or smartphone).

There is no obligation to purchase and download the entire digital guidebook. All of the driving and walking itineraries (chapter headings) can be viewed in the table of contents. As already noted, the link to it is in the post at the top of this forum.

I have been to Azores twice in 2024 (May and Sept). Both time spent 8~9 days in Sao Miguel, the biggest island, and still felt that I haven't covered it all. So if you are just going to make a stop for a few days on your way to Mainland Portugal, you don't need to over-complicate things by trying to do island-hopping. One stop at Sao Miguel is enough - much easier on flight planning and other logistics. Assuming you are spending less than a week at Sao Miguel, you can just find a hotel or Airbnb in Ponta Delgada (capital city) and rent a car so that you can cover the whole island. (Takes about 2 hours to drive from one end to the other.) Carl's guide will give you a lot of details on the attractions and you can even follow his turn-by-turn itineraries.

One word of caution though: if you want to rent a car, do it now. It gets expensive as you get closer to the summer, especially if you want to have an automatic transmission.

By the way, since you are going to Azores and Portugal, you can get very inexpensive eSim for your phone. Do NOT use your home carrier's International Travel Plan. It's a ripoff -- the cost for one day will be more than the cost of eSim for your whole trip if you buy the eSim yourself.

I bought my eSim at Airalo. A local eSim for Portugal will work at both places and costs only $10 for 5GB with a 30 day validity. During my previous trip for 8 days, I only used 1.5 GB since most of the data-consuming work can be done on WiFi when you are back in the hotel or Airbnb. The only thing needs cellular data is GPS navigation on Google or Apple Map. I even found a discount code MINFEI4587 which saves another $3.

Hope you make the trip. If you need suggestions on what attractions to visit, feel free to ask.

Steve Marsh, a favourite of this forum (for independent travel on a budget, usually in Scotland), has been to the Azores. He will release a video next Saturday.

He stayed (off season) at a rather nice looking hotel called the Hotel de Colegio, in central Ponta Delgada for £44 a night- breakfast included, and the hotel even has a pool.

Will try to remember to post his video (or videos?) when it/they come out. His travel day video from Edinburgh came out this morning.
