I'm considering booking a trip to São Miguel island for 5 nights then fly to Lisbon for 3-4 nights and then to Faro or Tavira for 3-4 nights before returning to Lisbon to fly back to Boston. We were in Portugal 2 years ago and used Rick Steves 14 day itinerary to visit many of the towns like Salema, Evora, Nazare, Coimbra and Porto but I loved Lisbon and didn't feel like we had enough time there. My question is what is the best way to travel from Lisbon to Faro - train, bus or flight? We rented a car the last time but would prefer not to drive this time. If we stay in Tavira, is it easy to take an Uber from Faro or is it better to go by train or bus?
Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Azores Airlines is supposed to start non-stop flights from Sao Miguel to Faro, so check there first. That would save 1/2 day of travel.
I have always rented a car in Portugal, so that would be my recommendation. Other forum members know better than me regarding Uber, buses and trains. If you go with a car, pick up at Faro airport and drop off in Lisbon, after you are done visiting all your must sees outside of Lisbon.
Direct to Faro would be excellent but it doesn't look like they are offering this yet as all flights have a stop in Lisbon. Thank you for your reply! I will keep checking before we book!
