We will be stopping off in the Azores for 5 days on our way home from Lisbon and are trying to decide whether to spend the entire time on Sao Miguel or also spend a day or two on another island, perhaps Terceira. We are more interested in seeing the natural beauty of the islands than spending time at beaches or in towns. Any opinions on this question would be greatly appreciated!
With only 5 days, keep the travel logistics simple by choosing one island. Based on your primary interest, visit Sao Miguel. You will have more than enough places to visit to see jaw-dropping natural beauty.
Even with the possibility of subpar weather at any time of the year, you will not be disappointed with this majestic island. Your most difficult decision will be what driving routes to choose, in order to maximize your days and evenings of exploration.
Thank you for your insights, very helpful!
Second Carl's suggestion. My family have been to Sao Miguel twice, each for 9 days, and we still haven't visited all the places we wanted to go. To be fair, we are the type that prefer a slow-paced vacation -- we sleep in, get up around 9 or 10, have a hearty brunch, and be ready to head out before noon, do one major attraction for 4~5 hours, then have a nice dinner and be back home for a relaxing evening, either catching up social media or streaming a movie/show.
You may want to push yourself and see more, but still, I see no need for any other island if you are there for less than a week.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate yourvinsights
