My wife and I visited San Miguel Island several years ago on a package trip to the Azores and Lisbon; Pointo Delgado was very nice and easy to walk around. We rented a car to explore the rest of the island. My wife was doing a little family history research. The package hotel was a business type hotel and filled with Scandinavian tourists. One night we attended a big dance held in their historic dance pavilion. No-one was there @ 930PM (close to my travel bedtime) but people flocked in by 1000PM the start time. Their ages were 16 to 80 plus and they all danced. We love dancing and all had a great time; it was a wonderful cultural experience. So be sure to research what events are taking place; employees of hotel were not aware of this event

I just sent you a PM with a link to my Azores guide. It will have information for 4 of the Azores islands I have visited over the last 23 years. I hope to visit 3 more different islands this year.

Airfare is most expensive from mid-June to September. April/May and October/November are still great months to visit, but with less opportunity to swim in the pools or ocean and more chances of rain. Delta Airlines will begin seasonal flights from JFK to Ponta Delgada, (Sao Miguel island), starting in June. If you can connect through JFK from where you live, it may be cheaper than Air Azores from Boston. Inter-island flights will charge more for luggage not booked through the Air Azores international flight to the Azores, though. You cannot book inter-island flights through Delta.

this is an area I'd love to check out in June 2018 for a wekk if my two young adult daughters are available to join me. Any recommendations are welcome! We love the outdoors, art, architecture and food. Thanks in advance!

For those who Carl has sent his "Guide". What a guide it is; "comprehensive" hardly describes it. I'm sorry we won't be in the Azores longer. We only stop for a day on a cruise, but Carl's guide is all we'll need, unless you want to count bringing an appetite. Carl even describes many places to eat. Thank you Carl.

I am in Sao Miguel finishing up 2 weeks of research for my guide. I visited Faial, Pico, and Sao Jorge for the first time. I also did more exploring in Sao Miguel. Next stop, Santa Maria to visit family and rest!

Digbydog...Not sure what the future holds for my guide, but I can tell you that I have sent it (the Google link) to about 500 Rick Steves readers and others in a little over a year! My fingers are crossed.

I hope everyone enjoys it in the current version and the planned update in late September.

I read that book as well, and once you are there in the Azores, it will feel 100 times better than reading about the Azores. This I can guarantee! Even after visiting the Azores over 15 times since 1994, I still feel the enchantment of being there and discovering something new.

I hope you enjoy planning your Azores visit using my guide.

Hi Carl,

Another request for your guide! My husband and I will be going on the Rick Steves tour of Portugal In Aug-Sept followed by a visit to the Azores as my husband's family is from Corvo. We would love to get any information that you have on the islands as we plan to visit a few of them.

Posted by

Joyce,

The private message with the link was just sent to you.

I plan on visiting Corvo and Graciosa for thr first time in September 2019 and will add them to my guide when I return home. The other 7 islands are already in the guide. September is normally a great time to visit any of the islands.

Let me know if you need any help with genealogy research for your husband’s Corvo ancestry. The church books, available online and for free, go back to the mid-1600s and are in very good condition. Being such a tiny island will make your research straight-forward and easier than the bigger islands.

Take care,
Carl

Very appreciated and Happy Holidays!

Hi LBH,

I just sent you a private message with the link to my Azores guide.

I explain how to use the taxis efficiently, especially in Sao Miguel. There are fixed prices to anywhere on the island, including sightseeing. Many people on transatlantic cruises, and use Cruise Critic, hire tour guides for their port day in Ponta Delgada, and I give you the hyperlink to that exact forum. A taxi will work just as well.

I encourage everyone at any age to rent a car and explore on your own. It is very easy to do, and the cheapest way to see the islands. The roads are safe and in great condition.

I have strived to make my Azores guide as detailed as possible, as you will read, in all aspects of visiting the Azores. I have been visiting the islands since 1994.

Only 2 Azores islands remain for me to visit, Corvo and Graciosa. I hope to visit them in September of 2019. I visit Santa Maria and Sao Miguel on every trip there.

Contact me anytime with questions. Happy planning!

Carl:
Thank you so very much............the age listed for car rentals tops out at 65, which is why I asked. Stick shift is not a problem just the age issue!

Looking forward to reading your information.
LBH

Lbrolly,

I just spoke with my cousin who owns a car rental agency in Santa Maria. Portugal does not have a law with ANY age restriction. Anyone with a valid driver’s license, at ANY age can rent a car. However, it is legal for an agency to impose a fee for someone under 25 or over 65. Not all agencies, such as hers, imposes any fees regarding age. Read the fine print when making a reservation to see what the car rental company is charging you. Shop around because many do not impose this fee.

I just updated my Azores guide to reflect this excellent question, and added a few more pieces of good information for renting a car, given to me by my cousin.

This should take care of any perceived issue for you or anyone else wanting to rent a car. Go for it!

Carl's guide is a godsend for my Azores trip planning. It provides an insider's no holds barred, tell it like it is information not found in all the guidebooks I have read (half a dozen). Especially about driving and parking in Ponta Delgada. The coverage of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, the two islands he frequented, are in such great detail that it took me a couple of days to digest. Again with information and tips not found in the guidebooks.

Publishing an ebook at Amazon would bring him a small fortune. Grab it fast while it is free :-)

Thank you staynsavor for your kind review. Many others have contacted me after visiting the Azores, with the same opinion. I hope other forum readers feel the same after reading it. 😎

It is easy to fall in love with the Azores islands. I knew there had to be something better out there to describe what I been priveleged to be a part of, going on 25 years of visiting. As it is, in my opinion, there was not. Hence, my Azores guide. In the past 22 months, over 600 Rick Steves readers have requested it. Let’s see what 2019 brings.

I agree. The best one I came across is "Azores (Bradt Travel Guides)". But it does not come close to the detailed and opinionated (in a good way) information offered in your guide.

In the past 22 months, over 600 Rick Steves readers have requested it.

600 x 20USD per download = 12,000USD. Once on Amazon, 600 will sky rocket. Unlike here, there will be published glowing reviews from those who appreciate it. Just saying ... :-)

Paramsobha,

I sent you a private message with the link to my Azores guide.

For anyone seeing this post for the first time...

As “Diveloonie” says, it is always quicker to request my guide by sending me a private message. I respond to every request (always within 1 hour to 48 hours) when I see it on the Portugal forum, from a Rick Steves private message, or when contacted directly when someone finds my email address on an older posting. If you do not receive a response within this time period, I may be on vacation somewhere and do not have time to check my email or visit this website. Over 400 of you have responded that you received it, and about 200 did not respond that you received it. My hope is that the group of 200 did indeed receive the link, but I can not be sure.

If you are looking for Azores genealogy research assistance, in your private message I will need your name and what you have so far in your research. This way I have a starting point of where to lead you. Many messages I get from forum readers are those trying to find your roots, which is wonderful. I have 33 years of research experience specific to the Azores, and have lots of great ideas to help you discover your ancestors.

We are staying in Lisbon for about 3 days at the end of our Portugal / Basque trips. Is three days long enough to visit one of the islands in the Azores or does it really require it's own trip?

Posted by
488 posts

Griffsma,

I sent you a private message with the link to my Azores guide.

I would suggest to anyone thinking of visiting the Azores that the 9 islands warrant a seperate trip. Three days on Sao Miguel would scratch the surface. In my guide, I write that 7 days is minimum for just the island of Sao Miguel. Sure, if all you have are 3 days and your intention is to get a taste of the Azores, AND if you time your flights correctly, you can do some of it. I would only do this as the first stop or last stop visiting the mainland of Portugal. You would be wasting your time if visiting in the middle of a trip.

Most questions should be answered in my Azores guide as to what there is to see and do. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Can I get the Azores guide as well? I am planning to go from Boston, but the recent reviews of Air Portugal that I am seeing are awful with cancellations, delays and poor customer service. Any thoughts on this? Delta/KLM is having a sale out of NY, so I may just do a 1 stop via JFK.

Posted by
488 posts

Hi Partnerscam39,

I sent you a private message. About Azores Airlines...we have a long history flying with them and can attest to many, many issues I personally know of. We have always been lucky to have flights that were fine with them. They are the only game in town from Boston and Canada with direct non-stops to the Azores. Last year I flew with Delta (connecting at JFK) because it was much cheaper on a Basic Economy ticket, but there are some issues to be aware of with the lower cost ticket. Read about what the ticket does not include before you make your decision vs flying on Azores Airlines and what that ticket does come with. Plus, you need to add a few hours each way sitting at JFK if on a Delta flight.

I explain a lot more in my guide about flying to the Azores.

I do not know why Paul reported me as spamming. I have been on the Rick Steves forum since 2010, and have been helping travelers with my (now 25 years) Azores advice since then. I have been thanked by a Rick Steves employee on the Portugal forum as well for my Azores advice. Nothing I have done has been unsolicited, as approximately 800 Portugal forum readers have asked for my Azores advice and a copy of my Google doc. The Rick Steves webmaster surely can attest to my actions, as a copy of each correspondence made through the website is kept, thankfully. I retain a copy of every correspondence request emailed to me directly, not through this forum, as well.

This does not include the (free) hundreds of hours I have given to forum members with Azorean genealogy assistance, that I have done, and currently doing, privately.

Maybe others here can attest to my unsolicited Azores travel advice and genealogy research assistance as well.

Littletroopersayss,

I sent you a private message.

Summer is very busy in the Azores, and accommodations begin to get booked normally more than 6 months before the summer. For anyone else thinking of visiting this summer, book your (refundable) accommodations first, and then your flights. Car rentals on the smaller islands will also have less cars available, but you should still be OK. The longer you wait, the prices will go up and there will be less availability, especially with flights.

I am visiting 5 of the Azores islands in September, booked everything last month, and found the hotel that I wanted on the island of Flores was full. The other islands had good availability. If you can play around with your travel dates, you can save a lot of money on your flights. Even a difference of one day could increase a flight cost by hundreds of dollars.

Hi Carl, my husband and I are planning to visit the Azores this June and hope to visit 3-4 islands over 10 days. I’d love a copy of the info you’ve compiled. It sounds like s treasure trove!
Thanks, Laurie

Hi Laurie,

If you are planning to visit next month, you might be surprised to find flights and hotels with limited availability. Check and reserve your lodgings before booking any flights. Also, depending on which islands you plan on visiting, you might want to choose 2 instead of 3. This especially applies to visiting Sao Miguel, which needs the most amount of time to visit.

Check your email for my Azores guide link. I hope you enjoy what I wrote.

Hi Carl,

A friend and I are traveling to the Azores this July! Would you be able to send us your guide as well? Thank for so much!

rachelverity0,

I sent you a private message. If you do not have your hotels and rental cars reserved yet, don’t wait to get these taken care of. The smaller islands will already have less options for hotels and cars in July, but Sao Miguel and Terceira should have plenty of rental cars still available.

Thanks, in advance

Lisa,

I sent you a private message with the information.

The interest I have experienced for requests for my Azores guide has been overwhelming and quite time consuming. I have sent the link to now over 800 people from this forum since 2 years ago. Many respond with great questions or help with their trip or ancestry research, which I also assist with, both at no cost.

I explain in the guide as to where I currently stand with this Azores project and what will be occurring by October 2019. The inevitability of having a 24/7/365 downloadable E-guide will happen due to the enormous size of the file and the ever increasing amount time to research and maintain it. I correspond as quickly as possible and personally with everyone. It is currently 188 pages long and will be expanded to around 225 pages with 2 more islands added, a redesign of the first 33 pages, more detailed information throughout the guide and many more photos will be included. I sincerely hope it will be successful in the future format when I am no longer able to send the link freely as I currently do. I hope you and others will agree.

With 25 years of travel experience to the Azores including yearly trips there for the past 5 years, speaking and reading the Portuguese language and doing Azorean genealogy research since 1986, I am honored to share what I have learned and experienced to anyone who is interested in the Azores.

I am very interested in visiting the Azores, and perhaps as soon as November/December 2019.
Any thoughts of the tours offered by Azores Getaways?
I would love for Carl to send me his guide to the Azores also.
Please PM me your guide if you get this message, Carl, or if you need my email to send your guide.
Info is limited and I have a real desire to travel there.
Thank you!

Redboy949,

I sent you the information.

I checked the website and the prices are excellent. It is because of the time of year when the weather could be iffy. However, the weather there can be iffy any time of the year because of their location. The past couple of weeks on different islands has been awful with cold temps and torrential rains. This is not normal.

Playing the odds, though, is how I do my recommendations. You might get lucky. If you go, definitely get a rental car.

Thank you Carl 👍
And thank you so much for your pm and copy of your guide.
I have another question, what kind of travel adapter plug do I need for charging my cell phone/iPad, etc?
I believe I already have a European adapter plug.
Will that work or can I easily purchase one there, specific to that location?
Thank you

Carl, thank you so much again!
You are truly a wealth of information and
helpful advice 👍
I certainly appreciate you taking your time to answer my questions so promptly.
My phone is an Android and that adapter from Amazon looks pretty awesome ,., a worthwhile investment for most international travel.
Hoping to make this trip a reality in the very near future.
Cheers! Redboy

Carl, we have an opportunity to visit Terceira in the Azores this January. We will be flying home (from a different trip) through Lisbon, and may try to visit our nephew in Terceira. Can you send me your info?
(I purchased Rick's book on Portugal, but am sorry there is nothing about traveling to the Azores.)
I would love any info you can share.
*I'm new to this forum. Can you message me? Or could I send you my email address?
Thank you.
