I would so appreciate any advice about renting an auto after being in Lisbon for 3 days to travel around the country for 10 days. Our trip starts April 21st. Any advice on where to rent a car or the airport? Also any reliable companies recommended. We are so excited about our upcoming trip!
Thank you-
I just did this end of February. Used AutoEurope to book rental with pickup at the airport after four days in Lisbon. The rental company was Enterprise. We drove to Évora, then Óbidos, Tomar and dropped the car in Coimbra. Took the train back to Lisbon to fly home.
Enterprise could not find our reservation in their system using the AutoEurope voucher number so it took longer than it should have on the front end. They also tried to charge a higher one-way drop fee until I showed them what was quoted on the voucher, which they honored with no questions. I took the extra insurance through AutoEurope not through Enterprise because it was considerably cheaper.
You will love having a car to explore Portugal.
Thank you so much Katheryne. I wonder whether you loved everything about your trip or any highlights? Thank you.
We pretty much loved everything we did/saw/ate.
Highlights in Lisbon: roaming around the Alfama district, the Maritime museum in Belem, the National Tile Museum, City of Spies Tour with Lisbon Walkers. We used Bolt to get around the city and it was cheap and easy.
Some other highlights:
- Alemendes Cromlech stone circle near Evora
- Dino Parque at Lourinha, the museum is fascinating
- Obidos--spend the night if you can to enjoy the town after the day trippers leave
- Alcobaca and Batalha monasteries
- Convento de Cristo in Tomar ( we really liked Tomar; pastries at Estrela were the best)
- Conimbriga Roman ruins near Coimbra
- University of Coimbra and Joanina Library in Coimbra, plus walking around the old town
Katheryne, Again thank you so much -you make me excited to go on this trip! We will be spending some time in the Algarve also.
Car rental advice and dummy booking is free.
Compare your booking with AutoEurope (which I have used in the rest of Europe) or any other big name car companies and zestcarrental.com (which I found was great for Portugal) and decide for yourself. Good luck.
Thank you funpig from Vancouver-I will research these auto co's. My son lives near Vancouver.
Last year spring, I used Enterprise from the airport to drive to Alcobaca, Batalha, Fatima, Tomar, then Coimbra. Once I got the key, I was on my own. No one was there to check out the car's condition with me, so I took lots of photos. Just in case.
Driving was easy, parking at Convento de Cristo was hard to find (but the interior was worth it). Driving from the highway into Coimbra was challenging because of the widespread road construction.
Katheryne, did you easily find the rental car return office in Coimbra? I had GPS, but it took 20 to 30 minutes for me to find the actual office. Tight parking on the small street.
I enjoyed Portugal. Great food, history, museums and people.
Can you tell me if an International Driver's Permit was required for a car rental in Portugal?
Not required by law but highly recommended
Rental agency may require

About the International Driving Permit - I just got mine and it's a snap. I went to my local AAA office and it took 15 minutes. It cost $35 which included passport-style photos. All I had to bring was my US drivers license and fill out a form.
We rented a car in Porto to go to Peneda-Geres for 3 nights, and then in Faro for a week, driving up to Lisbon. Each time we rented from the airport so we could get right on the freeway (didn't want to do any city driving in Porto or Lisbon) We used Zest (which is a broker). In Porto it was a 'Mystery' dealer, which turned out to be Thrifty; and in Faro we went with MasterKings because they had excellent reviews and a really good price. Both rentals were good; we really liked Masterkings; they were easy-going in the return, didn't inspect the car at all.
Have a wonderful time!
I had researched several car rental companies and chose Zest Car Rental for my trip last year. I’ll probably use them again this fall when we go. I usually avoid brokers, but Zest paired me with the UK based Holiday Car rental. The price was half of the other companies and there were no hidden fees. Everything went perfectly. We drove from their location near the airport in Lisbon to the Algarve, (3-4 hrs) where we stayed for two weeks.
Thank you so much for the auto information! I was just going to ask if anyone has used Zest Car. And I have compared Zest Car to Europocar Rental. I wonder quizuez where you love most in the Algarve. We plan to stay in Lagos in late April for a few days and visiting Sagres and Tavira, and Silves
I used Zest / MasterKings at the Lisbon airport last year for our drive down to the Algarve, and they were great. I'm using them again this summer. We added the toll transponder, which I recommend. Have fun on your trip!!
Thank you all!
