Algarve weather in late February?

Hi all, we hope to go on a 3-4-day self-guided bike tour in the Eastern Algarve in the week that straddles February and March, 2019. Does anyone have any input on whether this would be a good/bad idea, weather-wise? I really can’t get a good sense from the weather/climate websites. If it’s going to be cold, rainy, and miserable, we’ll probably go back to the drawing board. Thanks, Robert in Montreal

Don’t do it! I’ve been to the Algarve in February and it was horrible. We were the only people around. Everything was shuttered for the winter so things smelled like mold. Weather was cold and unpleasant. Everything was tacky and in English. Lots of horrible British, German and Dutch restaurants. Go somewhere else!

I don’t know where in the Algarve Emily stayed, but she always has a downer on the Algarve. It sounds like she has been there once and based on that limited experience tries to deter others from visiting. Thousands of people disagree with her and head there every winter. I haven’t stayed anywhere there with mould and I have been to the Algarve about 15 times!

Some of the smaller resorts such as Salema have significantly reduced services in the winter, but others such as Cabanas are busy with Northern Europeans, Americans and Canadians.

I have spent the last two Marches in the Algarve. Whilst the weather wasn’t as good as it is later in the year, it was better than the UK. We did have some rain and this year was one of the wettest Portuguese winters on record (still no mould!). Temperatures were between 15 and 22 degrees daytime. There were several people cycling the length of the Algarve when I was there. Later March would give you a better chance of drier weather.

I spent two weeks in Lagos in 2016 in February, so can share my experience. There were lovely days that were warm enough to eat outside and there were rainy and cold days. That time of the year is so uncertain. With only 3-4 days, you could have either extreme for most of your time there.
It’s very difficult to find consistently good weather that time of the year in pretty much all of Portugal.
