We plan to rent a villa in the Algarve in September. Our family includes my husband and me, our 2 adults daughters and their husbands, and four grandchildren ages 4-6yrs. We don't care about golf but a pool and close to the beach is a must. Is there an area on the Algarve that we should focus on? We are not gated community folks. Thanks for your thoughts.

I haven't come across any gated communities on the Algarve. There are some golf villages, but anyone can access them. Will you have your own transport? Some of the larger villas lie inland and need a car to access.
Lagos and particularly the Meia Praia area may suit. Easy access to a long beach and a short level walk into a nice town with a good choice of restaurants and supermarkets.
Forget the area from Luz to Sagres as these areas are hilly or have cliff access to the beach. Not easy with under 6s.
Alvor is also good for families.
